Worry Stones: Benefits, Uses & Origins

Worry Stones: Benefits, Uses & Origins - www.indieandharper.com

What is a worry stone?

A worry stone is a small crystal or gemstone about 3cm long with an indent in the middle. It can be used by rubbing the thumb back and forth to help soothe the mind.

Origins

Used in folk practice, worry stones have many different origins. They were used in ancient Greece, and Ireland as well as in Native American tribes. In most cultures, the idea originated by finding a stone smoothed by running fresh water and fiddling with it to ease a busy mind.

Uses

You can keep a worry stone in your pocket and use it whenever you feel comfortable, but here are some times we use it most:

  • During a difficult conversation
  • In a work meeting
  • While on a mental health walk
  • During meditating
  • While reading a book

Benefits

Sometimes used along with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, worry stones help ground us during anxious times. They can also help to displace some destructive coping mechanisms such as nail biting, scratching and lip biting.

As a grounding strategy, you can rub your worry stone and say affirmations aloud or to yourself. Our affirmations of choice are:

I am Loved

I am safe and in control

As I breathe I am calm and relaxed

I am capable of solving any problems that face me

I give myself permission to feel this way without judgment

I am trying my best and that is enough
