Um, how is that possible?
All of the jewels in our new collection are made with either Stainless Steel or Titanium. The gold pieces are then coated with a thick 18K Gold plating using the PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) technique. This new way of plating is much thicker than standard gold plating and is environmentally friendly as it has no dangerous byproducts.
While other metals are prone to oxidisation and tarnish, Stainless Steel and Titanium are highly durable metal alloys that do not rust.
What's the difference between Stainless Steel, Titanium and Sterling Silver Jewellery?
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is a steel alloy that contains chromium. The chromium reacts with the oxygen in the air and forms a protective layer that makes stainless steel highly resistant to corrosion and rust.
Pros:
- Resistant to tarnish
- Can be worn anywhere/very durable
- Does not scratch or become damaged easily
- Hypoallergenic
Cons:
- Rigid - can be difficult to repair if broken
- Silver colour is slightly darker than Sterling Silver
- Contains trace amounts of nickel
Titanium
Titanium is more rust-resistant than other metals, including Stainless Steel or Sterling Silver. When exposed to oxygen, titanium develops a thin oxide coating, creating a barrier that protects it from rust or tarnish.
Pros:
- The most durable of the three for saltwater exposure
- Can be worn anywhere/highly durable
- Does not contain any traces of nickel
Cons:
- Rigid - can be difficult to repair if broken
- Silver colour is slightly darker than Sterling Silver
- Due to the rigidity of titanium, styles can be more limited than Sterling Silver
Sterling Silver
Sterling Silver is the metal jewellery that is most commonly made out of. With anti-tarnishing properties, it is also a metal that does not generally irritate the wearer's skin.
The number ‘.925’ refers to the concentration of silver in the metal (92.5% pure silver). The purest form of silver is .999 however, due to the malleable nature of pure silver, it is generally only used as plating over other materials.
Pros:
- Malleable nature of Sterling Silver allows for more intricate designs
- Has a brighter shine
- Easily repaired by a jeweller/can be resized
- Hypoallergenic
Cons:
- Can tarnish
- Only water-resistant
- Not sweat-proof
- Recommended to be taken off before sleep
How do I care for Stainless Steel and Titanium Jewellery?
The best way to clean your stainless steel and titanium jewellery is with a bit of soap and water when it's dull and dirty. This helps clean off any pollutants and grime that may be on your jewels.
They can be cleaned in a bowl containing a mixture of mild soap and warm water and let sit for a few minutes. Next, take a soft cloth and rub the jewellery. For areas, like grooves or chains, you can use a soft-bristled toothbrush that will ensure you reach those hard-to-get places. Once you've cleaned your jewellery dry them completely with a lint-free cloth to remove all possibilities of water spots.
